Problems during delivery? .....
weak contractions
If emergency caesarian why? were you happy with this? .....
weak contractions. Yes, since they had made the water break I was afraid of infection if they would have waited much longer. Although, now I wish they would not have interferred by breaking the water. Perhaps contractions would have started by themselves again later.
Problems after delivery? .....uterus did not decrease itself so I bled heavily
****
1. Where you induced and if so what reason was given? The nurse thought I would be too tired if I did not get some sleep so she did not want me to stay up all night which I probably would have since my contractions were frequent and painful. Therefore she made the water break. Since contractions turned out to be irregular and week after that they gave me contraction stimulating drip. My my cervix never opened more than 6 cm.
2. Did you have an epidural? Yes Did you have any problems with your epidural?no I did not have problems with it.
Any other pain relief oxide mixed with oxygen administered by face mask
3. How long was the first / second / third stage?
I guess I was only experiencing the first stage since I stopped dilating.
4. Were you aware of any precautions made for the delivery eg saving blood units
/ not allowing a birth in the 'home suite', being given 'senior' midwives for
the delivery? No
Did you have any other intervention? Contraction stimulating drip. They made the water break before administering the drip.
5. Were you allowed to eat / drink and if not what reasons were given? Yes, after I was given the epidural I had some food.
6. What procedures were followed immediatley after delivery? They tried to make the uterus contract and when it did not they performed a hysterectomy because I was bleeding so heavily.
7. When did you realise that there was a problem?
Soon after they had taken my baby out since I heard the doctors talking
8. Was your husband allowed to stay in the delivery suite whilst they attempted
to stem the bleeding? no
9. What was done to stem the bleeding? All that could be done said the doctor.
10. Did you have any bi-manual compresions and if so did you have any pain relief? I do not know exactly all the procedures tried. I was put to sleep.
11. Were you conscious whlist they attempted to solve the problems? Yes, in the beginning and I woke up at some time and felt how they were massaging the uterus.
12. Did you ever feel as though you were not going to survive? No, I did not think about that.
13. Did you feel as though everything (ie the staff) were completely in control
of the situation? No, since I could hear that they were quite stressed and panicked.
14. Were you fully informed at all times about what was happening and why? No, but most of the time I was not conscious.

no

no
Were you asked if you would consent to a blood transfusion?
…..
no it was not planned, they did not ask me, they just said that they may have to perform a hysterectomy when I started bleeding so heavily due to the unresponsive uterus. It was an emergency situation. If they had asked me I do not know what I would have said. But I do believe that I might have died if they had not done what they did. So I guess they did not have much choice. And it would not have been fair on my baby or my husband if I had refused and died.
If after arrival of baby were you given any transfusion? …..
no, they just gave me one. It was an emergency situation.
What were the circumstances for you to be taken (back) in?
…..
I was very tired and pale so a few days after the arrival of my baby they gave me some more blood. They asked beforehand.
If taken (back) in were you told it was for a hysterectomy or warned
it may result in hysterectomy? …..
The hysterectomy was performed about 2 hours after the c/s. They did not know this was going to happen, the doctor told me they may have to take the uterus when it did not contract. They then worked on trying to prevent this but did not succed.

Do you feel there is anyone to blame or fate? …..
I am not sure, I wish they had not interferred so early by breaking the water and giving me drip to stimulate contractions. Perhaps contractions would have started again by themselves. I think my uterus may have been over stimulated which caused it to be too exhausted to decrease in size once the pacenta had let go. But these are just speculations.
Are you grateful to be alive? …..
yes, in a way for my son and husband’s sake. But it is of course difficult to know whether I would have died. Perhaps I would have been fine without the operation.

Miscellaneous
When did it HIT you? ..... straight away.
Did you plan to be an organ donor before the hysterectomy? Are you still? Or
vice versa. ….. I have never thought about it
Has it effected family life, if so how? .....
My husband and I are sad that we cannot have more children.
How has your husband / partner dealth with this? .....
Very well, he is trying to live in the present and is very happy with our son.
How has this changed the quality of your life? .....
I am going to try not to make it change the quality of my life for my son’s sake. But of course I am sad I cannot give him a brother or sister. If he will be very unhappy with being an only child when he grows up I am going to be very sad for him. Perhaps then we will consider adoption.
What are your overall views? ..... I was of course very shocked when i learned that they had to remove my womb and very sad that I can not have more children. I am trying to stay positive for the sake of my son but I have up and downs of course. I will probably feel sad now and then for many years to come when I see friends having their second child ect. Just seeing pregnant women can make me a bit sad since I am reminded that I will never carry a child again.
With hindsight would you have done anything differently? ..... Looking back I wish I had said I did not want them to make the water break. I wish I would have walked around instead since the cervix opened when I did that. I wish I would have had the opportunity to see whether the contractions would have started by themselves again. I am worried the uterus was overstimulated by the drip which may have caused the uterus to be so exhausted that it could not decrease itself to it’s original size. I believe that one should not stress or interfere too much with child birth. Of course it is necessary sometimes, but I wish I had been given more time to see whether things could have happened naturally.
Advice for others …..
All labours are different so it is difficult to advice others. But if you do not need to have a c/s done I think women should give birth naturally. I think it is risky to chose a c/s just because you are afraid of pain. You have to understand all the risks associated with a c/s. If you can give birth naturally I think that is the best.
Any other thoughts or comments? ….. not at this time
